I turn back around and see another zombie coming out from behind some trees. “I’m sorry if that offends you,” he calls after me. Normally I’d come back with some smart-ass remark, but my heart isn’t in it today. I can’t figure out who’s protecting who.” One minute you’re tough and the next you’re soft. We need to kill them before they kill us. Like a true macho man, he sees it, he kills it, he moves on. Dude has no time for any of the technical stuff. “It matters because…” My words trail off when I see his bored expression. “I do, I guess.” I shrug too and stand up. “Just wondering what makes them, I don’t know, tick?” “Crunch, it’s fucking dead-again,” he adds. “What are you staring at?” I guess in a way I hope Mom is alive too if she isn’t, then Pops will probably have given up and be rotting away somewhere. Even though he left me for dead, I hope he’s alive somewhere. Not for the first time in the last six months, I think of my parents-well, I think of my pops, more precisely. If I was ever squeamish about this shit, that ship has long since sailed. If anything, I find it a little fascinating these days-the way the blood has blackened and congealed, yet the brain is still idling. I nod a yes, and stab the zombie in the head again, just to be sure.

Its citizens, after having weathered a horrific, industrialized war, now spend their days pursuing the pleasures of the flesh, from sex and drugs to appetites far more grotesque. Kadrey has created the city of Lower Proszawa, a metropolis that's as grim as it is decadent. But being a secondary world, it is not the place we know. Where stereotypical secondary-world fantasy novels routinely take place in a fictionalized version of Medieval Europe, The Grand Dark takes place in a simulacrum of Eastern Europe between the World Wars. And yes, as its title loudly advertises, the book retains every inky ounce of Kadrey's trademark darkness. Rather than lean, mean, and hardboiled, Kadrey's new standalone novel is a sprawl of ornately arranged speculative fiction that ups the ante for urban-set fantasy. At the same time, there's a pulp sensibility to Kadrey's fiction that's become almost a brand - a brand that he's rebelling violently against in The Grand Dark. From his early cyberpunk novel Metrophage to his bestselling fantasy-noir series Sandman Slim to his stint on DC Comics' Hellblazer, the author's work has steeped itself in the murkier extremes of morality, technology, and the supernatural. Richard Kadrey has never faced a deficiency of darkness. Your purchase helps support NPR programming. This edition includes a commentary on the text by the translator and Michael Tanner's introduction, which explains some of the more abstract passages in Beyond Good and Evil. With wit and energy, he turns from this critique to a philosophy that celebrates the present and demands that the individual impose their own 'will to power' upon the world. Nietzsche seeks to demonstrate that the Christian world is steeped in a false piety and infected with a 'slave morality'. The work dramatically rejects the traditional of Western thought with its notions of truth and God, good and evil. Beyond Good and Evil confirmed Nietzsche's position as the towering European philosopher of his age. And sometimes the makers of prophecies don't know everything they need to know. Unbeautifully by Madeline Sheehan Book #2 in a family saga that deals with the trials and tribulations of falling in love in a criminal-underground world. It could be 3 or 4, I just couldn't decide because it is exactly what it is, 3.5 stars for me. Hero has been celibate for 7 years after the death of his girlfriend. Honestly it wasn’t enough with what they got. I wanted her in laws to suffer for everything they did to her. But im only giving it 4 stars because i needed more couple time. My goodness, how I cried when she read the cheating bastard’s letter, I wanted to hug her and give her comfort. I was happy she was able to help her too. I was a bit scared when the heroine’s husband fake wife (heroine from book 1) met her for the first time. I liked his parents very much, how they supported the heroine when she needed the most. And he does there’s no doubt in my mind of that. I needed for someone to loved the heroine whole heartedly. I get that she had her cousin’s back but the way she acted with the heroine when she met her had me wanting to bitch slap the woman.įor a moment I was scared because he also was a broken man. I liked how he became her friend despite everything.Īlthough I did wanted to slap Crystal’s face when she met the heroine. How she was able to pick herself after everything that happened to her. I’ve never cheered for a heroine so much like I did with this heroine. |
